IVF Then vs Now: Millennials vs Gen Z Mindset Shift

The success of In Vitro Fertilization depends on a combination of a lot of factors, including biological, genetic and environmental factors. The fertility profiles of different couples are different, and so the outcome of IVF procedures also varies accordingly.

By Dr. Riddhi Doshi | IVF Specialist with 15+ Years of Experience

In my almost 15 years of practicing infertility care, I have witnessed something far more powerful than upgraded IVF machines or new lab technologies.

I have seen a shift in faith.
Not blind faith but informed trust.
Not emotional dependency but collaborative belief in science.

This change becomes most visible when we compare how Millennials and Gen Z approach IVF treatment today. It is not about who is right or wrong. It reflects how awareness, technology, emotional readiness, and social acceptance have transformed the IVF journey.

When IVF Was New: The Millennial Experience

When many Millennials first walked into fertility clinics, IVF was still surrounded by silence and stigma. Infertility was rarely discussed openly and was often seen as:

  • A private failure
  • A social taboo
  • Something to hide from family
  • A “last option” after everything else failed

Most couples came with fear and confusion not because they lacked intelligence, but because society never emotionally prepared them to face fertility challenges.

At that time, IVF was not normalized. Information was limited, social media education was minimal, and success stories were rarely shared publicly.

So when a cycle failed which is scientifically common, many patients assumed:

  • The doctor was not capable
  • The clinic was not transparent
  • Something “wrong” had happened

This often resulted in doctor-hopping, emotional exhaustion, and broken continuity of care. As fertility specialists, we understood this behavior not as mistrust but as unprocessed fear shaped by social conditioning.

The Gen Z Shift: IVF as Information, Not Intimidation

Today’s Gen Z couples enter fertility clinics very differently.

They come prepared with:

  • Prior online research
  • YouTube and educational content
  • Social media awareness
  • Questions for doctors
  • Knowledge about egg freezing
  • Realistic understanding of success rates
  • Acceptance that IVF may require multiple cycles

Gen Z sees IVF not as a “secret struggle” but as a scientific solution.

They understand that:

  • The first IVF cycle is not guaranteed
  • Protocols change based on individual response
  • Treatment is personalized
  • Biology is unpredictable
  • Trust grows through open communication

Instead of changing doctors after one failed attempt, many prefer to understand outcomes, modify protocols, and continue treatment with clarity. This mindset creates one of the strongest pillars of fertility care: a true doctor–patient partnership

Why Faith Matters in IVF

As a medical professional, it is important to clarify faith alone does not create pregnancy. IVF success depends on multiple biological and clinical factors.

However, trust in the IVF process improves:

  • Treatment consistency
  • Emotional stability
  • Protocol adherence
  • Stress management
  • Honest communication
  • Trust-based decision making

When patients believe in the process and their doctor, the IVF journey becomes smoother medically and emotionally. This often leads to better engagement, fewer treatment dropouts, and healthier patient experiences.
